Heartbreaking: Scared and completely shut down puppy being returned to shelter by foster home
At the BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas, the hope of re-establishing an 11-month-old puppy’s faith in humans is rapidly receding. Scarlett’s foster parents stepped in two weeks ago to save the puppy from death, but they have since acknowledged their inexperience in dealing with a dog who is so fearful and shut down.
Scarlet arrived at the shelter as a stray on May 10, 2023. She was 45 pounds and was described as a Labrador retriever mix. When she first arrived at the shelter, she cowered in a corner and rejected rewards, flinching and quivering whenever anybody approached her.
The puppy had been scheduled for death on May 15, but a BARC foster stepped up and saved her just in time.
And she’s returned. It’s not Scarlet’s fault; she has no notion that humans may be nice at this time. An experienced foster parent is required, someone who knows how to properly care for dogs like Scarlett.
Please notify approved rescue groups, friends, family, and social media connections about her situation. Sharing can save lives.
